"Forest"

Drawing by 17-year-old Beatrice from the District of Gicumbi
"This drawing depicts a young girl wandering through a forest alone. This girl is raped by the man in the picture because she is alone and defenseless. Beatrice says that she is especially scared of encountering a drunk man in a forest alone."
Teacher observation:
In Rwanda, especially in rural areas, parents used to send their little children to search for sticks to help make fire. If a young girl is sent into the forest, she risks being attacked not only by drunk older men, but also by boys in the area who search for girls this way. |
"Streetgirl"

Drawing by 23-year-old young woman
"Me, I have become a street girl because my parents died of HIV/AIDs. I became pregnant after, and now my child and I are both HIV infected." |
