The Photovoice Method
What is it?
Photovoice is a participatory research method where the participants themselves take photos in order to further explore the topic of research. Based on the belief that photos can help to better explore complex or sensitive topics, photovoice enables the research participants to reflect on their daily lives, to identify problems as they perceive them and to facilitate the formulation of their own solutions to these problems. Furthermore, the participants are invited to take photos of what they identify as being issues of concern to them, either by taking a photograph of an item or scenario that represents the main problem of concern, or by taking a photograph of what they identify as being a solution to that problem. Then, the participants examine the photos, reflect, discuss in a group and, following these discussions, give a title to each photo. It is the process of taking the photos and reflecting that make the photovoice not only a participatory method, but also a method that has the power to mobilize people.

The Participant's Toolkit
The participant’s toolkit on participatory visual methodologies was developed for a practical and interactive training session with young Rwandan researchers. The toolkit provides an overview of the photovoice and drawing methods as participatory research tools: i) how to implement these methods; ii) how to gather and interpret data, iii) what are the ethical concerns of these methods. The procedures and the themes explored throughout the training were guided by gender-based analysis.

La méthode de la photovoix
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
La photovoix est une méthode de recherche participative qui favorise la prise de photos par les participantes elles-mêmes pour explorer un sujet. Reposant sur l’idée que les photos permettent d’exprimer plus facilement des enjeux complexes ou des sujets sensibles, la photovoix est utilisée comme moyen pour les participantes de réfléchir sur leur réalité quotidienne et d’identifier les problèmes tels qu’elles les perçoivent ainsi que de faciliter la formulation de leurs propres solutions pour les résoudre. Aussi, les participantes sont invitées à prendre des photos de ce qu’elles perçoivent comme étant des enjeux pour elles, soit en photographiant quelque chose qui représente le problème constituant l’enjeu, ou en prenant une photographie de ce qu’elles perçoivent comme étant une solution à ce problème. Ensuite, les participantes examinent les photos, réfléchissent, discutent en groupe et, suite à ces discussions, donnent un titre à chaque photo. C’est ce processus de prise de photos et de réflexion qui fait en sorte que la méthode photovoix est non seulement participative mais aussi mobilisatrice.

Le cahier du participant
Le cahier du participant sur les méthodologies visuelles participatives a été utilisé pour une formation pratique et interactive avec de jeunes chercheurs rwandais. Ce cahier du participant, tel que conçu, offre un aperçu des méthodes de la photovoix et du dessin en tant qu’instruments de recherche participative : i) comment utiliser ces deux méthodes; ii) comment procéder à la collecte des données et à leur interprétation; iii) quelles sont les questions d’éthique associées à ces méthodes. Pour cette formation, l’analyse selon le genre a été l’élément central tant au niveau des thèmes abordés que des procédures apprises.
